What is a Kissimmee skunk's mating habits, when do they have babies, how do they raise their young?

Skunks are mammals that are native to North America. There are a variety of species of Florida skunk, depending on the area in which they live. The females will build their dens in the abandoned nests of other animals. If they are located in urban areas, they are also known to build their nests under porches, in garages and sheds. They will seek shelter where ever they can find a place that is close to water and food sources. They insulate their dens with hay, leaves and grass.

Mating habits
During winter, Kissimmee skunks are less active. They will stay in their dens and will not wander very far. Skunks are not monogamous and one male will breed with many females. Before the kittens are born, the female skunk will relocate to a separate den. They will ensure that it is warm and ready for the kittens. The male will not play any part in the rearing of the kittens.

When do they mate and have babies?
The females do not mate until their second spring. Both male and female Florida skunks are sexually mature at about 10 months of age. During February the males will go in search of a mate. They will roam up to five miles to find a willing partner. If the female is not interested, she will emit a smell that is meant to repel the male. The gestation period is approximately 60 days. The female will give birth to a litter of 1 to 15 kittens. Older females give birth to larger litters. They will also breed earlier in the season.

Young kittens
The Florida kittens are born blind, with short, soft fur. Their eyes will open after about 3 weeks. They are unable to spray until they are about 3 weeks old.

How do they raise their young?
The babies are nursed by their moms for six weeks. During this time, they will not leave the den. After they are weaned, at about two months, they will join the mom when she leaves the den. The kittens will stay with their mothers until they are about 8 months old. They will then be ready to start out on their own. Female Florida skunks are very good, protective mothers. If they feel that their litter is threatened, they will move them to a different den. Skunks are not aggressive animals but are fiercely protective of their young.
